Malaysian gelam honey has the ability to reduce the proliferation rate of liver cancer cells at low dose but not affecting the normal liver cells. This antiproliferation effect is associated with the ability of gelam honey to induce apoptosis in liver cancer cells.
Morphological analysis for apoptosis detection was done using fluorescent microscope under 400X magnification in HepG2 cells (A=untreated, B=H2O2, C=Gelam honey) and in WRL-68 cells (D=untreated, E=H2O2, F=Gelam honey) after 48 hours of incubation. White arrows indicate cell shrinkage.
